Pulling My Sweet Tooth

I wouldn't call myself a crazed healthnut but I do like to take care of myself. As I get older I am becoming more conscious of what I put into my body as it can have a huge effect on the way you look, feel, and act. For a few months now I have been really cutting back on sugar. And boy is it tough because I have a sweet tooth. Here are a few (146) reasons to cut back:
When I was a kid, I unknowingly poisoned my body on a daily basis with loads and loads of sugar. It might sound unbelievable to you, but I actually drank sugar water when I was a kid. I craved it. I would mix in a few spoonfuls of sugar into cold water, mix it, and then gulp it down. Gross/weird huh?? It makes me sick to my stomach just thinking about it now. That's probably why I am not as tall as I'd like to be, and why my teeth are so susceptible to cavities now... among other things :)

Now I am trying to make up for it by cutting back. Although it's hard, it's only food and I still treat myself once in a while. I can attest that I have had more energy and feel healthier for doing it. I'd say it's been a good trade-off. What aspect of your eating habits should you cut out? The more important question is: What aspect of your eating habits are you willing to cut out?

  1. Excellent question. With all the dietary changes going on with people at Excel, I've been really inspired.

For one thing, I need to just eat less of everything. My diet is pretty good, but I am proof that you can overdo a good thing ;-) I have started keeping a food journal, just writing down what I eat so I can keep track of it, and that helps.

Then, like you, I do need to reduce my sugar and refined carbs. I don't eat a LOT of them, but I feel kind of sick when I do eat cookies or cake or other sweets (and with Katie in the royalty, it seems there are a lot of those around at events, so keeping them out of the house isn't enough).

But... baby steps, which seems to be what this blog is about, and that's very cool. We switched to Barilla Plus pastas and whole grain bread, which are healthier, and that's a start.

  2. Amen to that brother, sugar...while delicious is one of the key offenders for "weight retention" as you spike your glycogen levels, it's harder to tap into the fat you need to burn because you are using the sugar for energy instead.

  3. And don't forget, sugar feeds cancer cells! Another great reason to try and reduce your daily intake!
